Stichting Cosmicus is een landelijke organisatie die educatieve, culturele, sociale en wetenschappelijke activiteiten en projecten organiseert. Hiermee wil zij een bijdrage leveren op het gebied van maatschappelijke participatie, integratie en emancipatie. Daarnaast richt zij zich op de opleiding, ontwikkeling en loopbaan van scholieren, studenten en alumni.

Historie
Stichting Cosmicus werd in 1995 opgericht als studentenorganisatie. De organisatie groeide echter met haar leden mee, waardoor haar aandachtsgebied zich uitbreidde. Momenteel zijn er acht studentenafdelingen verspreid over het hele land actief die veelal gevestigd zijn op universiteiten en hogescholen. Vanuit Stichting Cosmicus gevestigd Rotterdam worden deze afdelingen gecoördineerd en begeleid. Naast de studentenafdelingen houdt Cosmicus zich met diverse andere taken bezig (zie hierover meer onder Activiteiten).

Visie
Het Latijnse woord ‘cosmicus’ stamt af van het Oudgriekse ‘kosmos’ en betekent ‘wereldburger’. Cosmicus staat een ideale wereld voor waarin wereldburgers harmonieus kunnen interfereren. Deze ideale wereld kan slechts bereikt worden door mensen die toegerust zijn met de nodige en juiste competenties waardoor zij hun omgeving kunnen benaderen met vertrouwen, interesse, tolerantie en respect.
Cosmici stellen hierin de zorg voor de mens centraal en besteden aandacht aan een betere toerusting op de toekomst, waarbij de opleiding en ontwikkeling van het individu essentieel zijn en betrekking hebben op kennis, houding en gedrag. Hun originele blik op maatschappelijke, wetenschappelijke, educatieve en culturele onderwerpen maken cosmici uniek. Zij zetten zich voorts in voor de totstandkoming van acceptatie van en begrip voor elkaar en zijn zich bewust van hun wereldburgerschap en hun verantwoordelijkheden. Om de daarbij behorende kennis, houding en vaardigheden te verwerven en de interculturele competenties te ontwikkelen wil Cosmicus gelegenheid bieden aan diegenen die zich vanuit dat idee willen ontplooien in en voor de samenleving.

Activiteiten
Om haar doelen te verwezenlijken houdt Stichting Cosmicus zich bezig met diverse activiteiten, te weten:

• Onderwijs: voortgezet onderwijs in Rotterdam en Amsterdam (Cosmicus College en Cosmicus Montessori Lyceum) en basisonderwijs in Rotterdam en Arnhem (beide Basisschool Cosmicus);
• Studentenafdelingen: Cosmicus heeft acht studentenverenigingen verspreid over het hele land;
• Kennisoverdracht: Cosmicus geeft vier keer per jaar het opiniemagazine de Cascade uit;
• Milieu: Cosmicus organiseert jaarlijks de internationale milieu- en wetenschapsolympiade INESPO voor scholieren;
• Diversiteit: Cosmicus is voorstander van diversiteit en houdt zich daarom met diverse activiteiten op dit gebied bezig, waaronder ProDiv om biculturele studenten kennis te laten maken met decentrale overheden en netwerk- en cultuurreizen naar Istanbul.

COSMICUS FOUNDATION

Cosmicus is a national organisation that aims to advance the education, development and careers of students and alumni through educational, cultural, social and scientific activities and projects. The Cosmicus Foundation was established in 1995 and is currently active through its eight centres distributed throughout the Netherlands. These centres are supported by the Cosmicus Institute and Cosmicus International. Furthermore, the Cosmicus Alumni Network is also part of the Cosmicus Foundation.

With its expertise and proactiveness, Cosmicus is at the forefront of competency development and student careers counselling, acting as a bridge in realising unity within diversity, synergy, innovation, interaction and dialogue between people and culture. Cosmicus advocates diversity, and pays much attention to the reality of social pluralism. This enables Cosmicus to also contribute to commonality and solidarity within society.

The Latin word ‘cosmicus’ derives from the ancient Greek word ‘cosmos’ and it means ‘world-citizen’.

During this age of speed, the world around us is shrinking and communication is becoming more global. Thanks to the news media and enhanced mobility, changes in every area are happening faster and faster, and over a greater range. This succession of changes offers new opportunities, but there are disadvantages as well. Boundaries become blurred, different cultures are confronted with each other more frequently and more intensive¬ly, and – whether intentionally or uninten¬tionally – there is increasing interaction between people and societies. To be able to cope with these issues adequately and effectively, social cohesion and commitment, an ethical sense of responsibility, a free and critical mentality and a universal view of aesthetics and culture are prerequisites.

Cosmicus advocates an ideal world in which world-citizens will be able to interact in a harmonious way. Such an ideal world can be realised only by people who are equipped with the right and necessary competencies which enable them to approach their environment with confidence, awareness, tolerance and respect.

For Cosmics, the main focus is on caring for human beings and trying to equip them for the future in the best possible way. To accomplish this, the education and development of the individual, by focusing on his or her behaviour, feelings and thought, are essential. It is their clarity and originality of perception of social, scientific, educational and cultural issues that makes Cosmics so unique. They are also committed to accomplishing mutual acceptance and understanding, and they are aware of the fact that they are indeed citizens of the world, with all the responsibilities this entails. To obtain the knowledge, mentality and skills this requires, and to develop intercultural competencies, Cosmicus aims to offer opportunities to those who wish to develop themselves on the basis of this idea within and for the good of society.
